Honeybee Removal

(912) 678-2144

When honeybees swarm, they are looking for a home to establish their new colony. They can find cavities and voids within your home and quickly build a nest of wax combs, which they fill with honey, pollen and baby bees. When the colony gets big, they can produce many pounds of honey. An average colony has 30,000 to 60,000 honeybees hard at work. If the colony suddenly collapses (often from pesticide application) the honey leftover can attract other pests such as cockroaches, mice, spiders, wax moths, small hive beetle and other pesky critters. Honey has even been known to ooze out into the structure on hot days when the wax can melt.

Honeybee removal is a process of combining beekeeping experience with construction expertise to remove and rescue unwanted bees from any location. Bee rescues can only be done when daily temperatures do not fall below 55* F. There are several methods to bee removal (cut-outs, trap-outs and swarm removals), depending on where the bees are located in the structure. With each of these methods, the bees are rescued and given a new home.

Most removals take between 4-6 hours. Some removals can take longer depending on how long the bees have been in the location and the difficulty of reaching their nest. Some jobs can be done with ladders, some require the rental of other equipment such as a manlift, or scaffolding. Each removal is different and has a unique set of challenges.

We will ask you to:
– Describe the location where the bees are entering
– Tell us when you first noticed the bees
– Approximate the height of the entry point
– Provide a picture so we can determine access options

Pricing:
Residential and Commercial – most jobs $750 flat fee

What does “cut-out”, “trap-out” and “swarm removal” mean?

Cut Out
A Cut-out is the preferred method of removing bees. First, we locate the bee colony using inspection cameras, infrared cameras and general knowledge to find their exact location. Bees will make their homes in cavities and voids in structures such as the eaves and soffits, between joists in walls, floors, ceilings, etc. We determine the best way possible to access your bees, whether from inside, or outside. We cut open this area to access the nest. We use a special bee vacuum to collect the bees while carefully removing the wax, honey and baby bees from the cavity.  Then, using a variety of materials, we seal the cracks and openings so the bees will not be able to return to this area.

Trap Out
A Trap-out is a different method of bee removal that can be done if the bees’ nest is in a location that cannot be accessed by cut-out (such as a block wall or a tree). A trap-out usually involves multiple visits and can take from 3-6 weeks. Pricing determined by location of colony.

Swarm Removal
Every year honeybee colonies swarm. Half the colony takes the queen to find a new location to start a new colony. The old colony remains in place and produces a new queen. When honeybees swarm, they will often gather on tree branches and other objects while sending scout bees to find a suitable home. This is the ideal time to have the colony removed – before the bees move into unwanted spaces.
